Nobody is excited to clean a toilet. But there’s a surprisingly simple hack making the rounds that turns an annoying chore into a slightly more satisfying one. All you need is a handful of ice cubes.
Here’s the idea: dump enough ice into the bowl to rise above the waterline. Then add your cleaner of choice. Powder, liquid, gel — whatever you use. Apply some to the sides of the bowl and a little over the ice, too.

Let it sit for a few minutes. If the ice melts fast, add more. Then scrub with your toilet brush for about 30 seconds, moving the icy slurry around the bowl. Flush when done.
Use small cubes. Standard ice tray size or crushed ice works well. Avoid large chunks — they can block the trapway and cause plumbing headaches you really don’t want.

Why it works
The cold slows the melting, which keeps your cleaner suspended in the bowl longer. Normally, the product just slips below the waterline before it has time to do much. With ice in the mix, it forms a thick slurry that clings to stains and gives the active ingredients time to actually break things down.
Ice also acts as a mild abrasive. As you scrub, those small bits help dislodge grime without scratching the porcelain. And the cold temperature suppresses odors that tend to thrive in warm, humid bathroom air.
It’s a small thing. But it works better than you’d expect.
